In 2021, IUCN launched a standardized assessment of species recovery and conservation impact: The IUCN Green Status of Species. The Green Status of Species was developed in response to an IUCN Members' Resolution to answer the question, "what does successful conservation mean?" Through this assessment, species are assigned a Species Recovery Score and Category, which take into account species' ecological functionality and pre-impact baselines. The Green Status of Species is a new part of the Red List assessment process, and its new metrics are already being incorporated into Red List accounts. The IUCN Species Strategic Plan includes a target of 5000 Green Status assessments published by 2025.
This webinar will provide an overview of the Green Status assessment process, the tools and guidance that are available to help new assessors, and showcase examples of completed assessments and how they are helping incentivize species conservation.

Dr. Molly Grace (Lecturer, University of Oxford; Co-Chair, IUCN SSC Green Status of Species-SSC Integration Task Force)
Dr. Grace is a Lecturer in Ecology and Conservation based in the Biology Department at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on assessing species recovery, specifically the development and application of the IUCN Green Status of Species, and how historical ecology and palaeoecology can inform conservation.
Mike Hoffmann (Head of Wildlife Recovery, Zoological Society of London)
Mike Hoffmann heads up a number of cross-cutting thematic programmes at ZSL focused on innovating solutions to complex conservation challenges. He has more than two decades of experience with the IUCN Red List, including as former chair of the Red List Committee, and formed part of the team that developed the IUCN Green Status of Species standard.
Dr. Claudia Hermes (Red List Officer, BirdLife International)
As part of the Red List Team at BirdLife International, Dr Hermes evaluates the status and extinction risk of birds for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with a focus on species in the Americas. Apart from her work on the Red List, she also carries out bird assessments for the IUCN Green Status of Species.
