About

Reverse the Red is a global movement that ignites strategic cooperation and action to ensure the survival of wild species and ecosystems and reverse the negative trend of biodiversity loss. Through a strategic initiative, Reverse the Red brings together a diverse coalition of leading scientists, advocates, and partners committed to using a data-driven and science-based approach to assess, plan, and act for species conservation.  Reverse the Red provides the tools and expertise to empower governments, partners, and local communities to set and reach biodiversity conservation targets and celebrates and amplifies successful achievements for species.

Reverse the Red Pillars

  • Reverse the Red is building and strengthening national level networks who work collaboratively to accelerate conservation and coordinate to deliver on national biodiversity targets.

We are creating a global network of paid staff teams manning Centers for Species Survival located within strong institutions, ensuring the capacity to catalyse assessments, planning and action to improve conservation status of species. Based on the SSC model of engaging scientists and species experts, Centers for Species Survival are deeply collaborative and strategic. (10 operational and 20 additional in development)

Understanding that conservation action and planning is undertaken at a national level, we are forming National Specialist Groups that bring together diverse volunteer experts across diverse institutions, disciplines and taxon. (4 operational and 6 in development)

Together, Centers for Species Survival and National Species Specialist Groups bring the diverse expertise and staff capacity needed to help key national conservation partners to work together more collaboratively, with access to global tools and best practices, in achieving their coordinated national species targets.

  • Reverse the Red is emphasising measurement tools that show the effectiveness of conservation action and assess progress towards species and biodiversity targets.

We are focusing the skills and ambition of conservation actions on the goal of reversing the risk of extinction as measured by the IUCN Red List assessment and providing tools and motivation to articulate and demonstrate what it takes to reverse the red list rating of species.

Through collaborating with global networks, we help establish and support a measurement platform that assists countries in measuring achievement of post-202 Global Biodiversity Framework targets of improving the Red List index in each country.

  • Reverse the Red is growing online and in-person audiences to foster community, share information and best practices, convene events, build capacity, and galvanise action for conservation.

The actions needed to save species are within the reach of every person. Together, we can make a difference if these actions are focused and coordinated. Using social science and research to develop campaigns, we are using our global networks to scale up the conversation around biodiversity conservation. Through trainings, webinars, and resourcing, we are empowering communities to take conservation action and educate and communicate about the need for and success of their conservation work.

  • Reverse the Red is dedicated to amplifying successful conservation efforts because the conservation movement is in need of optimism.

Through in-depth case studies, webinars, a first launch of Reverse the Red Day and a 2023 Year of Action, and communications training, we are mobilising communications and education professionals across the conservation community to share the importance and impact of conservation actions by diverse partners and networks. By amplifying success, we hope to inspire others to act.
